History of the Trolley in America

In 1994 the City of Ojai embarked on a new venture, setting out to establish a fixed-route transportation system within the Ojai Valley. Wanting to maintain Ojai’s old-fashioned, small town feel, the City purchased several buses fashioned after the 1800s-style trolleys. In doing so, the City reopened a rich chapter in transportation history

Horse Cars

In the 1830s, trolleys were small wooden carriages drawn by a team of horses. As advanced as these carriages were for the time, the roads were not so advanced. The wooden wheels were soon replaced by wheels of steel, drawn over tracks to facilitate travel on the rutted roadways. Once considered a luxury, by the 1850s trolleys were used by everyone, winning the hearts of Americans.
